ENISA European Network and Information Security Agency

ENISA stands for ‘European Union Agency for Cybersecurity’ and is an EU agency that focuses on improving cybersecurity in the European Union. The agency was founded in 2004 and is based in Athens, Greece.

ENISA works closely with national cyber security agencies and other relevant organisations to help EU member states strengthen their cyber security capabilities. Its tasks include conducting studies and analyses on current cyber security issues, promoting best practices in the field of cyber security and supporting EU member states in implementing the EU Network and Information Security Directive (NIS Directive).

ENISA plays an important role in strengthening cooperation and coordination between EU Member States in the field of cybersecurity. The agency also works closely with the European Commission and other EU institutions to develop and implement a common EU cybersecurity strategy.

ENISA's strategy proposes concrete objectives for the agency in the form of seven strategic objectives that set out the agency's priorities for the European Union for the coming years. The strategic objectives from the publication ‘IDENTIFYING EMERGING CYBER SECURITY THREATS AND CHALLENGES FOR 2030’ are as follows:

  • Empowered and engaged communities across the cyber security ecosystem
  • Cybersecurity as an integral part of EU policy
  • Effective cooperation between operational actors within the Union in the event of a major cyber incident
  • Top-level expertise and skills in the field of cybersecurity throughout the Union
  • a high level of trust in secure digital solutions
  • Anticipating new and future challenges in the field of cybersecurity
